The first known evidence of the Celts was in Hallstatt, Austria where
Celtic graves were found dating from 700 B.C. The Celts from this region
were of the first people in Northern Europe to make iron. By 500 B.C. the
Celts spread to France, Portugal, Spain, and the British Isles. The Celts
moved south and southwest and sacked Rome around 390 B.C. Some Celtic groups
moved into the Balkans to what now are Bulgaria and Greece.
Between 300 B.C. and 100 A.D. the Romans conquered much of Europe. The
only Celtic cultures to remain were those in Ireland, Scotland, Wales,
southwest England, and Brittany in northwest France. Today their modern
populations retain stong Celtic elements. (original text see links)
